Castello Ursino

Castello Ursino

~~From Via Castello Ursino, you will arrive in Piazza Frederick of Swabia, where, in the center, you’ll find the mighty Castello Ursino. Among the best kept of its kind, it was erected by King Frederick of Swabia (1198-1250) on a hill dominating the town and the nearby port and lost its function when the lava flow of 1669 surrounded him and pushed him away permanently from the sea. The castle consists of a square of fifty feet on each side on which are juxtaposed four corner towers and four semitorri (the eastern and southern collapsed in the earthquake of 1693). Today the castle is home to the Civic Miseo.
